Our associate Carolina Melo, is collaborating with the World Bank to understand how to introduce AI into the classrooms

Our associate Carolina Melo is working in a groundbreaking project in collaboration with the World Bank to enhance teaching methods through artificial intelligence. Since 2017, Melo has served as an external consultant for the institution, playing a pivotal role in the development of Teach Digital, an advanced tool designed for early childhood, primary, and secondary education.

The Teach Digital Project

Initially developed by the World Bank in 2017, the Teach tool has significantly evolved with the introduction of Teach Digital, an enhanced version that integrates advanced technology into the classrooms. This tool leverages sophisticated language models, akin to those used by ChatGPT, to assess teaching through video analysis. The evaluation process with Teach Digital begins with submitting a classroom video and a detailed rubric. The AI transcribes the video and applies predefined criteria to code and evaluate the teacher’s performance. After initial tests, the tool is now being used to analyze more than fifty videos, providing precise and objective feedback to teachers.

Benefits and Applications

Teach Digital offers personalized recommendations for teachers, which can be valuable for school management and policy-making. It helps identify areas for improvement in specific regions or cities and aids in implementing changes within the educational system. The integration of Teach Digital promises to transform how teaching is evaluated and improved, providing educators with valuable tools for professional development and enhancing overall educational quality. Additionally, it incorporates technology into the classroom for both students and teachers, further advancing educational practices.
