Hugo Salgado recently presented his research at an event held in Brazil.

Our junior fellow, Hugo Salgado, recently presented his research at the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on High-Dimensional Modeling, hosted by the São Paulo School of Economics at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV EESP). The event took place between April 21st and 30th and brought together over 70 students, academics, and researchers from universities around the world.

The Study

Hugo Salgado presented his thesis “Effects of Maternal Incarceration on the Educational Trajectories of Their Children,” which explores how a mother’s imprisonment affects her children’s educational outcomes. Using data on grades, SIMCE test scores, attendance, and grade repetition, the study examines which children benefit the most from living in prison with their mothers. “I analyze their progress in grades, SIMCE scores, attendance, and instances of grade repetition. I also look at which children benefit the most. It turns out that girls tend to benefit more than boys, and in cases of more serious offenses, such as those related to drugs, it’s the boys who benefit the most from living in prison with their mothers,” said the researcher.

The Seminar

The event featured the participation of professors, students, and postdoctoral researchers from both Brazilian and international institutions. It provided a space for participants to present their work, engage in academic discussion, and build professional networks in a collaborative and welcoming environment. Reflecting on the experience, Hugo commented: “The experience was very positive. I had the chance to present twice, and the feedback I received was very encouraging.”
